Coach Trips To Record Repositories 2007/2008

The Society organises periodic coach trips to a range of record repositories where members and friends can further their research into family or local history.  For more information or a booking form for any of the trips below please email the trips team Linda  or  Val

London Record Repositories


Please note the  Family Record Centre (FRC) is jointly run by the General Register Office, which is part of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and by The National Archives (TNA). As announced in June 2006, the services offered by TNA at the FRC will move to TNA, Kew by the end of March 2008. The National Archives, Kew

Saturday 9th February 2008 - (before the planned move of the Family Record Centre to TNA Kew)

Family Record Centre

Saturday 13th October 2007 - (before the planned move of the ONS - Office for National Statistics -  to TNA, Kew)

Saturday 8th December 2007 - (after the planned move of the ONS - Office for National Statistics -  to TNA, Kew)

 

Coaches depart from:
Atherstone Bus Station  -  7.00am prompt

Nuneaton Bus Station (near Deluxe Coaches' office)  -  7.15am prompt

Wolvey ( Bull public house car park)  -  7.30am prompt

 

There will be a 20 minute comfort break during the journey. We aim to arrive at the repository between 9.30 and 10.00 am


Return Journey:
Depart London at 4.40pm prompt. Please leave the repository before 4.35pm

Arriving Wolvey, Nuneaton then Atherstone approx: 7.00pm to 7.30pm

The National Archives at Kew - (formerly PRO)

The National Archives is England’s main repository.  There is something here for every family and local history researcher from local records to military ones, and much to put flesh on the bones.  New visitors can join the introductory talk on arrival.  Readers Tickets are essential – please ask for information.

Note: anyone wishing to join the trip in order to visit Kew Gardens will be welcome provided seats are available.

 

Family Records Centre

The Family Records Centre holds census, GRO and many other items, plus computer links.  This is a one-stop centre for all who do not have access to Ancestry.

The following repositories are located within walking distance of the Family Record Centre and can be visited by joining a FRC coach trip:

County, Regional and Diocesan Record Repositories  2007/2008

Trips to the following record repositories can only be arranged when we have a minimum number of ten people.

Birmingham City Archives

Holds parish registers for churches within the City of Birmingham; extensive collection of directories, rate books, etc., for the city.  Top two floors of the Central Library building.

 

Derbyshire Record Office at Matlock

Civil records for the county, parish registers for Derbyshire parishes and records for the diocese of Derby.  School, electoral, court and many more records relating to the county.

 

Gloucestershire Archives

parish registers & bishops' transcripts for the diocese of Gloucester, probates, county records and archived collections including electoral lists and prison records.

 

Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland Record Office (at Wigston)

The usual civil records and parish registers for the county.  In addition, there are a number of holdings for estates within the area (some of which held land beyond Leicestershire).

 

Lichfield Record Office

parish registers and bishops' transcripts for the diocese of Lichfield which previously included Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, parts of Shropshire.  Probates, marriage licence bonds & allegations, and much more.

 

Lincolnshire Archives

This repository includes the Lincoln diocesan records, and the records for the Peculiar Jurisdiction of Leicester, Rutland, Northampton and Nottingham along with usual county archives.

 

Northamptonshire Record Office

Holds county records and the Peterborough diocesan records covering Northamptonshire, Rutland and the Stoke of Peterborough.  A number of holdings include material relating to other counties.

 

Nottinghamshire Archives and Southwell & Nottingham Diocesan Record Office (in Nottingham)

Houses archives for the county of Nottinghamshire, the city of Nottingham, the diocese of Southwell & Nottingham, and other local bodies, families and individuals.

 

Oxfordshire Record Office

“Over 800 years of historic documents relating to the county - registers, letters, maps, wills, diaries, and many more”

 

Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (at Stratford-on-Avon)

Despite the location and name, this archive holds a number of deposits relating to north Warwickshire: well worth a visit.

 

Shropshire Record Office (at Shrewsbury)

Parish registers for the county along with civil records.  Holds a number of Roman Catholic and non-conformist records.  Shropshire once had a thriving coal industry: miners often moved between the mining areas of Shropshire, Staffordshire and north Warwickshire.

 

Staffordshire Record Office

In addition to copies of parish registers, at Stafford RO you will find Poor Law records along with the county archives.  

Close by is the William Salt Library  another useful source for family historians.

 

Stoke-on-Trent City Archives

In addition to copies of parish registers for the area, the archive holds rate books for the “six towns”, along with extensive collections relating to the Potteries.

 

Warwickshire Record Office

Local civil records including Poor Law, education, etc.  Copies of parish registers for the county.  Note that Warwickshire was originally in the Lichfield and Worcester dioceses.

 

Worcester Record Office (County Hall) & Worcester History Centre (city centre)

The Record Office holds original documents and indexes to probates along with extensive records from solicitors, companies, etc..  However, you need the History Centre to view probates on film, parish registers, etc.
