This was a thriving textile area and it was also placed on the edge of a good coalfield. It was the site for the Priory of St.Mary the Virgin and its ruins remain to this day. The novelist George Elliot (Mary Ann Evans) was born here. Her book "Scenes of Clerical Life" depicks the area in her time and the "Milby" in her book is said to be Nuneaton it self.
