North Warwickshire Marriages Index (NoWMI)
A vital component in taking our research
into the early 1800s and hopefully further back, is the marriage
information. The IGI provides only the baldest information - name of
bride and groom, date and marriage place. NNWFHS is setting up a
project to index the marriages from local parish registers. This is a
project that requires volunteers. Everyone can be involved who has a
computer, wherever in the world they are based. For more information

On-line
Parish Clerks in Warwickshire
The on-line parish
clerk (OPC) was born in the south-west of England and successfully
developed in Cornwall and Devon. You can see their websites are:-
http://cornwall-opc.org/index.htm or
http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/OPCproject.html
The purpose of the
OPC is to act as a point of contact for those with interests in or
enquiries about that parish. The role is what the volunteer wishes to
make it – from pointing enquirers to where they can source information
(be it on the web or in a repository) or by offering details from
material that the OPC personally holds. A number of OPCs are actively
involved with transcribing census and/or parish registers – and some are
known to be leading local historians with a wealth of information at the
fingertips. Some volunteer to photograph places around the parish for
those unable to visit the area. All are different but with a common aim
of helping others. It is hoped that those holding resources for a
parish, or information about places or people in it, will be willing to
share their material with the OPC making it a two-way process.
In Warwickshire we
are fortunate to have the excellent “Pickard’s Pink Pages” where
genealogical information is made freely available:
http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/ As a result of discussions, a
number of like-minded people got their heads together on the
Warwickshire Discussion List (http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/WARWICK.html)
to investigate the possibility of operating an on-line parish clerk
system for the county. It went live in January 2006 with David Franks
voluntarily acting as co-ordinator.
In January, some
14% of the county’s 250 or so parishes had a volunteer and the details
were launched on Pickard’s pages. The OPC scheme is intended to work
hand-in-hand with local family history societies and this includes
NNWFHS which itself has a commitment to make resources available for
researchers.
If you would like
to act as OPC for your parish, or you wish to share material you have
acquired for a parish, do contact either David Franks, or the OPC for
the parish. We are all involved to help each other and enable the
sharing of information.
