OUR SOCIETY
Family History is one of the most pleasurable and fastest growing leisure activities today.  It is very interesting but can be a daunting task for the beginner.

The NNWFHS started life as the Nuneaton Family History Group.  Because of our rapidly increasing membership and the family interests that many of our members have in North Warwickshire we expanded our area and changed our name to reflect this in April 1998.  NNWFHS is also a member of the Federation of Family History Societies.

We welcome all levels of interest.  If you are starting out, we can set you on the right path and show you how and where to access the records you need.  If you are stuck, we can show you where to go next.  We can also help you to find other people who share your surname interests.

We have a growing number of members from all over the world as well as the far corners of the UK.  We appreciate the difficulties experienced by our ‘far flung’ members, and help to make them feel part of the society through our quarterly journal, personal correspondence, and telephone and email helplines.

We organise workshops, slide shows; talks by family and local historians on a variety of subjects; visits to local and national record repositories, and local places of interest; and other events throughout the year. We exhibit at Family History Fairs and other ‘heritage’ events.

OUR MEETINGS

Our monthly research meetings are friendly and informal.  Everyone is welcome, you do not have to join straight away but can come along as a guest for up to 2 sessions.

We meet on the second Tuesday of every month at Nuneaton Library, Church Street, Nuneaton from 7.30 - 9.15p.m. (enter  by the side entrance).  Our meeting fee is £2 per member and £3 per guest.

At our meetings the library’s records and facilities plus those of the society are available for you to carry out your research. We have a bookstall selling society publications and a microfiche reader hire service and microfiche lending library.  We have experienced genealogists on hand to give expert advice on where to start, or  where to look  next, and how to use or find the records you need.  You will also have the opportunity to chat to other members and share with them your own experiences and problems.

FAMILY HISTORY SESSIONS AT ATHERSTONE LIBRARY

Atherstone library hosts family history sessions on the third Saturday of each month from 2.00pm to 4.00pm during normal library opening hours.  All library records are available for research and the reader/printer plus 3 of the library's computers are available for family history use.  NNWFHS committee members are on hand to provide a help and advice service as well as the usual library staff. So if you have ancestors who came from Atherstone or the surrounding villages please come along.  Everyone is welcome.

INDEXING PROJECTS

The society is actively indexing, compiling databases, and publishing indexes for a wide variety of local genealogical records including the marriage registers of parish churches North Warwickshire Marriage Index Project (NoWMI), the burial registers of parish churches and municipal cemeteries, and the family trees and histories of old Nuneaton families (Project Nefam).  We are involved in the National Burials Index programme. We have already contributed data for the first two releases of this index and are continuing to transcribe and index burials for the remaining churches in our area. Volunteers to help with these Society projects are always welcome. Volunteers from our society are also working with staff at Nuneaton Register Office on a project to create an online searchable index of the Warwickshire registers of births, marriages and deaths.
